Le Magasin Littéraire offers four membership tiers, each designed to serve different levels of engagement with our literary community:
Our membership model exists to:
For: Curious readers exploring Le Magasin Littéraire for the first time, or those looking to sample our literary curation before committing to membership.
The Guest tier provides access to 2-3 complete sample pieces per month—full texts, not excerpts—allowing you to experience the quality and diversity of our publications. You’ll also enjoy rotating selections from our curated collection of obscure classics and public domain works, enhanced with LML introductions. In our community spaces, you can view writing prompts (though you cannot submit responses) and read comments on published works. Free members receive our public monthly newsletter and have access to our quarterly contests ($10 entry fee).
For: Passionate readers who want unlimited access to exceptional contemporary literature and our complete archive, those building their personal literary library, and book lovers seeking curated discoveries beyond the mainstream.
Reader membership unlocks everything Le Magasin Littéraire publishes—all ~360 pieces annually (~30 per month) plus our complete archive of every piece ever published. You’ll receive all quarterly digital issues of the LML Review, our flagship literary journal, with a 10% discount on individual issue purchases. Your membership includes complete access to our curated obscure classics collection: ancient epics (Gilgamesh, Mahabharata, pre-Columbian works), East Asian classics (Journey to the West, Tale of Genji, Korean sijo poetry), Francophone African and Caribbean literature, proto-fantasy and weird fiction precursors, marginalized European modernists, and forgotten women writers from the 19th and early 20th centuries. You can fully participate in our community by posting comments on all works, submitting responses to writing prompts, attending virtual events, and accessing our Circle community platform.
Reader members receive a 20% discount on the annual LML Review Anthology in print, discounted contest entries ($5), and 10% off workshops. Your reading experience is enhanced with tools, including a reader profile, reading history tracking, bookmarks, and favourites lists.
For: Aspiring, emerging and established writers ready to submit their work for publication, readers who want early access and behind-the-scenes insights, and those who believe in directly supporting the literary ecosystem and want to be part of building it.
Supporter membership includes everything from the Reader tier plus significant contributor benefits and enhanced access. You’ll enjoy 48-hour early access to new releases, behind-the-scenes editorial content, and exclusive Supporter features in the LML Review—all quarterly issues are completely free with your membership. As a Supporter, you unlock the ability to submit your own work for publication during our quarterly submission windows. If your work is published, you’ll earn 20% engagement-based compensation, receive a Published Contributor badge on your profile, get your own author profile page with bio and book listings, and be featured on LML social media when your work appears. You can showcase your published books through our contributor book listings feature.
Supporters receive a 10% discount on the annual LML Review Anthology in print, free contest entry, 20% workshop discounts, and priority registration for events. Your connection to the platform deepens through our bi-weekly Supporter newsletter featuring editorial insights and platform updates.
For: Serious writers building their literary careers, professionals who want maximum platform benefits and priority treatment, committed supporters who deeply value the LML mission and want exclusive access to editorial leadership, and those ready to apply for Active Contributor status.
Patron membership represents our highest tier of access and benefit. You receive everything from the Supporter tier with significant upgrades: 72-hour early access to new releases, priority editorial review with guaranteed 7-day response time (versus our standard 30-day timeline), and 30% engagement-based compensation when your work is published (versus 20% for Supporters). The LML Review quarterly digital issues are free, and you receive the annual LML Review Anthology in print completely free as well. Your professional credibility is enhanced with a yourname@lemagasinlitteraire.com email address that you can use for literary correspondence and submissions to other publications. Patrons are eligible for our Editor’s Pick feature, with potential showcase placement in curated sections throughout our quarterly issues, providing enhanced visibility and promotion for your work.

We recommend annual memberships, which offer a 17% savings (equivalent to 2 months free). In addition to better value for committed members, annual plans provide uninterrupted access for a full year, simplified billing (one payment instead of twelve), and support long-term platform stability and planning.
We accept credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express), debit cards, PayPal (where available), and Apple Pay or Google Pay. All payments are processed securely through Stripe with PCI-compliant payment handling, and no payment information is stored on LML servers.
Membership prices are listed in Canadian Dollars (CAD). For international members, your payment provider automatically converts to your local currency with exchange rates determined by your bank or card issuer—there are no additional fees from LML. All members receive the same content and benefits regardless of location, the professional email (@lemagasinlitteraire.com) is available worldwide, and the print anthology ships internationally (delivery may take 2-4 weeks).
Memberships automatically renew at the end of each billing period—monthly memberships renew on the same date each month, while annual memberships renew on the anniversary of your sign-up date. You’ll receive an email reminder 7 days before renewal including your current tier and renewal amount, with the option to change tiers or cancel before renewal. If a payment fails, we’ll automatically retry after 3 days and again after 7 days, sending email notifications for each failed attempt. Accounts are downgraded to Guest tier after 7 days of failed payment, though you can reinstate your membership by updating your payment information.
When upgrading your membership, you’ll receive immediate access to new tier benefits with prorated credit applied to your first billing cycle. For example, if you upgrade from Reader to Supporter mid-month, you pay the difference and immediately access Supporter features. Downgrading takes effect at the end of your current billing period—you retain current tier benefits until the renewal date with no refunds for partial periods. You can switch between monthly and annual billing at renewal time, or contact support@lemagasinlitteraire.com for mid-cycle switches with prorated adjustments applied.
Guest and Reader members cannot submit work for paid publication on Le Magasin Littéraire, though both tiers can participate in unpaid community features like writing prompt responses. Guests can enter contests for a $10 fee, while Readers enjoy free contest entry as part of their membership benefits.
Submission privileges begin at the Supporter tier. Supporter members can submit work during our quarterly submission windows, with all submissions undergoing standard editorial review and decisions typically announced within 4 weeks after submission.
There’s no guarantee of publication—acceptance depends on quality, fit, and editorial standards—but published Supporters earn 20% engagement-based compensation on their work. This tier provides emerging writers with a clear pathway to publication while maintaining the editorial rigor that defines our curated platform.
Patron members receive the same submission access with meaningful upgrades: priority editorial review with guaranteed response within 7 days (versus our standard 4-week timeline) and 30% engagement-based compensation when published, reflecting both their higher platform investment and our commitment to supporting serious literary careers.
Patrons also gain the exclusive privilege to apply for Active Contributor status during our annual selection period, a distinction unavailable to any other membership tier.
LML’s 12 Active Contributors receive 12 guaranteed publication slots per year. They earn our highest compensation rate of 40% on engagement-based revenue.
Submission Windows: LML accepts submissions on a quarterly basis to ensure predictable workflow and quality editorial review. Quarterly publications are prepared one quarter in advance to allow proper editorial collaboration, publication planning, and production quality.
Quarterly Schedule | Q1 (January-March) | Q2 (April-June) | Q3 (July-September) | Q4 (October-December) |
|---|---|---|---|---|

Editorial review, selection, decisions announced | November | February | May | August |
Publication calendar planning, editing, finalization | December | March | June | September |
Publication | January-March | April-June | July-September | October-December |
This quarterly advance system allows editorial teams to collaborate meaningfully with writers, provides proper time for revisions and polish, enables strategic publication calendar planning, lets Active Contributors coordinate their guaranteed slots, and prioritizes quality over rush.
Total Publications: ~360 pieces per year (~30 per month)

Active Contributors | 144 | 40% | 36 |
Supporter/Patron | ~216 | ~60% | ~54 |
To be eligible for publication, you must:
All submissions are reviewed for quality, fit, and editorial standards. Membership tier does not guarantee acceptance, editorial decisions are final, rejection does not affect membership benefits, and resubmissions are encouraged in future quarters.
We publish across a broad range of literary genres, with each publication slot representing a single release. We accept both standalone pieces—complete works published in one installment—and serialized works that unfold across multiple releases. Submissions may include short stories, essays, poetry (individual poems or collections), flash fictions, and serialized chapters (available to Active Contributors or by special editorial invitation).
For complete submission requirements, formatting guidelines, genre specifications, and detailed instructions on preparing your work for consideration, please consult our Submission Guidelines, a comprehensive resource designed to help you present your best work to our editorial team.
Le Magasin Littéraire operates on a sustainable, value-based revenue-sharing model designed to ensure that every published work has a genuine opportunity to earn fair compensation for its author. We believe that literary value emerges through meaningful reader engagement, and that compensation should reflect the real impact a work has on its audience—not its position within an algorithmic hierarchy.
Unlike platforms that rely on algorithm-driven discovery, editorial favoritism, or pre-existing audience size to determine reach and earnings, Le Magasin Littéraire is founded on the principle of equal discoverability. Every published work enters the platform on equal footing, with compensation determined by authentic reader response rather than artificial amplification or suppression.
This commitment to equal discoverability is also the reason we deliberately maintain a limited publication pool. By publishing a reduced number of authors at any given time, we increase the visibility and potential revenue share of each contribution, ensuring that attention—and compensation—is not diluted across an excessive volume of content. This approach allows every piece, from an aspiring writer’s first publication to the work of a committed contributor, to receive a meaningful opportunity to be read, engaged with, and fairly rewarded.
This limited release model further enables us to uphold strict quality standards. Every piece we publish is carefully selected to meet our editorial exigence, ensuring coherence, literary integrity, and long-term value for readers. Quality is not a secondary filter applied after publication; it is a prerequisite for entry into the platform.
Within this framework, we redistribute up to 40% of membership revenue to writers through engagement-based performance as our primary criterion, complemented by defined performance bonuses for ambassadorship, reader retention, special contributions, and platform-building activities. This model ensures that writers are rewarded not for their existing influence or promotional reach, but for the value their work delivers once it is discovered.
By prioritizing fairness, transparency, controlled growth, and reader-driven evaluation, Le Magasin Littéraire offers a compensation model that respects both the integrity of literary creation and the autonomy of its readership.
An active writer’s compensation is determined by either their subscription tier or their Active Contributor status, as applicable. Upon becoming inactive, a writer’s compensation is reduced to a rate of 5–10%.
Writer Type | Tier Requirement | Compensation Rate |
|---|---|---|
Supporter (Published) | Active Supporter membership | 20% |
Patron (Published) | Active Patron membership | 30% |
Active Contributor | Invitation/Application | 40% |
Archived Contributor | N/A | 5-10% |
Component | What It Measures | Applicability |
|---|---|---|
Reader Completion (RC) | Combined completion rate balanced against actual time spent reading | All published work |
Reader Interactions (RI) | Active participation signals: likes, comments, bookmarks, reviews, recommendations | All published work |
Return Readership (RR) | Percentage of readers who engage with multiple pieces by the same author | Authors with 2 + published pieces |
If you’ve published only one piece, the Return Readership component cannot be calculated. Your Engagement Score is redistributed proportionally between Reader Completion and Reader Interactions.
Reader Completion (RC)
What It Measures: Reader Completion is calculated using two complementary metrics: content completion percentage and verified reading time. This combined methodology mitigates artificial inflation caused by rapid scrolling, inactive sessions, or similar behaviors, ensuring that measured progress reflects authentic reading engagement.
Why This Matters: Completion is the strongest signal of quality. Finishing a piece requires sustained interest, emotional investment, and perceived value. Writers whose work consistently holds readers from beginning to end demonstrate literary craft that keeps audiences engaged—exactly what we want to reward.
Reader Interactions (RI)
What It Measures: Reader Interactions capture active engagement beyond passive reading. When readers choose to like, comment on, bookmark, favorite, or recommend a piece, they signal emotional resonance, intellectual stimulation, or lasting value. These actions require intentional effort and reflect the depth of a reader’s response.
Interaction Types & Point Values:
Action | Effort Level | What It Signals | |
|---|---|---|---|
Like | Low | Quick appreciation | |
Bookmark | Moderate | Intentional saving for reference or rereading | |
Favorite | Moderate | Addition to a curated personal collection | |
Comment | High | Thoughtful, substantive engagement | |
Recommendation | High | Active advocacy to other members | |
Return Readership (RR) — 10% of Engagement Score
What It Measures: Return Readership tracks whether readers who engage with one of your pieces come back for more. This metric captures author loyalty and reader relationships beyond individual piece quality. It answers the question: “Do readers become fans of your work, seeking out your voice specifically?”
Why This Matters: Return Readership rewards writers who build lasting reader relationships. It recognizes that consistent quality across multiple pieces creates value beyond any single publication. Writers who cultivate dedicated followings demonstrate professional-level craft and voice that keep audiences coming back—a hallmark of serious literary careers.
Your earnings are calculated using a transparent, engagement-driven system designed to reward both the quality of your work and its genuine readership.
Step 1: Base Performance Value
Each piece generates a base value determined by:
Higher engagement scores and broader reach both contribute to higher base performance value.
Step 2: Monthly Distribution:
Each month, we allocate up to 40% of membership revenue to the writer pool. A normalization process ensures total payouts equal the available pool while preserving the relative performance of individual works.
The Result: Works with higher Engagement Scores earn proportionally more from the monthly pool. Quality of reader response—not just visibility—determines value.
Long-Term Earnings: Published work continues earning as long as it generates engagement. Build a catalog of compelling work, and your archive creates ongoing passive income.
Previously Active Contributors who stepped away, former Supporter/Patron members who published a work, and one-time special contributors qualify for Archived Contributor status. They earn 5-10% of engagement-based revenue (reduced rate) on previously published archive work only, with no new publication slots.
This reduced rate reflects the lack of ongoing obligations or membership requirement and the passive nature of archive maintenance, while still providing fair compensation for past work’s continued value. Archived contributors can rejoin as Supporter or Patron members anytime to resume full compensation rates (20% or 30%), with previously published work converting to the active rate.
Beyond base engagement-based compensation, Le Magasin Littéraire awards performance bonuses recognizing exceptional contributions to the platform and community. These bonuses are funded from the compensation pool and distributed based on measurable achievements and platform impact.

Total Compensation: Base engagement earnings + performance bonuses = total annual compensation, not exceeding 40% of platform revenue in aggregate across all contributors.
Active Contributors represent the pinnacle of Le Magasin Littéraire’s literary community. This invitation-only program (with application option for Patrons) recognizes exceptional writers committed to producing excellent work consistently.
Fixed Roster: 12 Active Contributors
Each Active Contributor receives 12 guaranteed publication slots per year (one per month minimum). This fixed structure ensures a predictable publication roadmap, sustainable compensation per writer, quality control through our curated roster, real opportunities for non-AC writers (60% of slots), and risk mitigation since AC shortfalls are absorbed by the non-AC pool.
Active Contributors Are:
What We Look For: Writers whose work makes us excited to publish them. Writers whose next piece readers ask about. Writers we’d proudly feature in all our marketing. Writers who would be a loss if they left LML.
Annual Selection Cycle:
Active Contributor selection occurs once per year during the fall, with the roster for the following calendar year announced on September 30. This timeline ensures adequate time for editorial planning, publication scheduling, and project coordination before the new year begins.

Independent Contractor Status: All writers, contributors, and any individuals who receive earnings through the Le Magasin Littéraire (LML) platform—in any form—are engaged as independent contractors (autonomous workers), not employees of LML.
No employer–employee relationship is created by participation on the platform.
As such, contributors are solely responsible for complying with all applicable tax laws, filings, and payment obligations arising from earnings received through LML.
Reporting Thresholds and General Notice: Certain jurisdictions impose annual reporting thresholds that require LML to issue tax information slips once total payments meet or exceed a specified amount.
These thresholds affect reporting obligations only. All earnings are taxable regardless of whether a reporting threshold is reached or a tax slip is issued.
Contributors Earning at or Above Reporting Thresholds:
Canadian contributors who meet applicable reporting criteria (generally $500 CAD or more in a calendar year) may receive a T4A slip, issued by February 28 for the preceding tax year.
Earnings must be reported as self-employment income in accordance with Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) requirements.
U.S.-based contributors who earn $600 USD or more in a calendar year will receive IRS Form 1099-NEC (Nonemployee Compensation), issued by January 31 for the preceding tax year.
Reported earnings are classified as nonemployee compensation, and contributors are responsible for reporting and remitting all applicable self-employment taxes at the federal, state, and local levels.
Tax reporting requirements vary by country and jurisdiction.
LML provides an annual earnings statement for record-keeping and reporting purposes. Contributors are responsible for determining and fulfilling their local tax obligations and are strongly encouraged to consult a qualified tax professional.
NOTE: LML does not withhold taxes for international contributors.
Tax Identification Requirements: To ensure accurate reporting and timely payment processing, contributors must provide valid tax identification information before receiving any compensation:
Failure to provide required documentation may result in delayed or suspended payments.
Contributors should consult a qualified tax professional regarding their individual circumstances.
If You Believe Your Payment Is Incorrect:
Please refer to our Refund Policy for full details regarding cancellations and refunds.
For Contributors:
Upon cancellation, any previously published work remains available in the platform archive and transitions to Archived Contributor status, with earnings calculated at the applicable 5–10% rate. Contributors may no longer submit new work; however, they continue to earn from their existing published archive. Any Active Contributor status is suspended as of the cancellation’s effective date.
Following cancellation, contributors receive a confirmation email that:
This process ensures continuity of archived work, transparency around status changes, and flexibility for contributors who may wish to resume participation in the future.
Le Magasin Littéraire reserves the right to suspend or terminate any membership or contributor account for conduct including, but not limited to, the following:
Enforcement Process: Where appropriate, LML may issue warnings for minor or first-time violations.
However, severe violations—including but not limited to fraud, plagiarism, or serious misconduct—may result in immediate suspension or termination without prior warning.
Members and contributors will be notified by email of any enforcement action taken. An opportunity to appeal may be provided, except in cases involving severe violations.
Effect of Suspension or Termination: Termination or suspension may result in the following consequences:
Appeals: Where eligible, appeals must be submitted in writing within fourteen (14) days of notification by emailing legal@lemagasinlitteraire.com, including a clear explanation and any relevant supporting evidence. All appeals are reviewed internally. Decisions rendered following review are final.
You’re responsible for keeping your login credentials secure, not sharing your account with others, notifying us immediately of unauthorized access, and using a strong, unique password. Memberships are individual and non-transferable—sharing accounts violates our Terms of Service and may result in suspension or termination. We protect your personal information (see our Privacy Policy for details), you control your profile information, and you can request data export or deletion at any time.
Le Magasin Littéraire reserves the right to modify this Compensation & Membership Policy at any time. Changes may be made to adjust to platform growth and evolution, respond to community feedback, comply with legal or regulatory requirements, and improve fairness and sustainability.
Material changes—defined as changes affecting compensation rates, membership benefits, or payment terms—will be communicated via email notification to all affected members with 30 days’ advance notice before implementation and posted prominently on our website. Minor changes such as clarifications, corrections, or formatting updates will simply show an updated “Last Modified” date at the top of the document with no advance notification required, and ongoing use constitutes acceptance.
For Active Contributors, material compensation changes do not affect current AC terms—existing contracts are honored through completion, with new terms applying only upon renewal. For paid members, annual members see changes take effect at renewal, while monthly members receive 30-day notice before changes apply. All members can cancel before changes take effect with no penalty.
By continuing to use LML after policy changes, you acknowledge you’ve been notified, accept the updated terms, and agree to be bound by the new policy. If you don’t agree with the changes, you can cancel your membership before they take effect with no penalty—we’re sad to see you go but understand.
For questions, concerns, or notices related to these Terms, please contact us at legal@lemagasinlitteraire.com.
